Who We Are
First Look Art is a Bay Area collective linking emerging artists and enthusiasts through events, online spaces, and support groups, building an inclusive and accessible community without traditional gatekeeping.
Our Values
Equality
There is no hierarchy among artists or general members. Artist and member voices are encouraged and shape a community that we love. The environment of First Look Art is built by our membership, and is subject to change when members decide it so.
Inclusion
First Look Art includes and encourages a diversity of perspectives and backgrounds. Artists are free to explore controversial topics in their work and members may engage in discourse.
Anti-Consumerism
We allow artists to pursue their creative dreams without capitalistic pressures. We focus on long-lasting impact, rather than mass consumption. We see artist profit not an objective, but as a tool that provides artists with freedom to pursue their creative dreams.
Support
First Look Art members support each other in artistic and non-artistic settings. Members are encouraged to seek support in artistic critique, advertising projects, and more.
Artist Spotlight
Meet MegaN Sampognaro
My art is driven by appreciation for small details that sometimes go unnoticed. I love magnifying those intricate details through my work so that everyone can enjoy them. I love all kinds of mediums but especially graphite, ink, watercolor and gauche. Outside of art, I am an ecologist and I studied how bees are impacted by treatments for reducing fire fuels. I decided to join First Look Art because I think it’s a great idea to help artists get their work out there since self-promotion is a big challenge.
My Inspiration
I have loved Maria Sibylla Merian for quite some time and I always return to her work. I love how much there is to look at and draw from her style in my own.

The following pieces show the range of my artwork from serious to whimsical. The Clarkia stellata (Pink flower) is one of my favorite plants I saw while doing field work for my masters.

Meet the Founder
“Every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter.”
― Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray
Hi! My name is Sadie Godfrey. I have always had a love for the arts, and wanted to create my own group to find others with my interests. I love to paint, work with charcoal, and take photographs. Typically, my work involves animals or nature since I love the natural world. Outside of art, you can find me hiking or studying Environmental Economics and Forestry in my second year at UC Berkeley.
